Huddersfield Town 3 Wycombe Wanderers 0: Lee finally gets off the mark and is ready to step in for Rhodes

THE international call-up of Jordan Rhodes could ease a forward line selection headache for Huddersfield Town manager Lee Clark.

With Rhodes and Lee Novak having scored four goals each so far, Alan Lee came off the bench against Wycombe to bag his first league goals for the club.

Former Rotherham striker Lee, 33 last week, performed well as a substitute at Cardiff on Tuesday and is clearly determined to make up for lost time.

Clark said that Lee was close to starting on Saturday and may draft him in for tomorrow’s JP Trophy first-round tie at Northampton.

With Rhodes missing Saturday’s game at Oldham to link up with the Scotland Under-21 squad for the Euro qualifier against Bulgaria, there is a chance for Lee to cement a place.

Lee joined Town on deadline day last August but struggled to make an impact, the highlight being his goal in the 2-1 FA Cup fourth round defeat at Arsenal in January.

Clark said: “Jordan Rhodes, Lee Novak and Alan Lee have 10 goals between them and Alan is forcing my hand. We lose Jordan so Alan can stake his claim.”

Wycombe came to defend and their game plan worked until Clark sent on Lee and Gary Roberts just before the hour.

Lee looped home a flick header with his first touch and then nodded in Jack Hunt’s terrific cross to stretch Town’s unbeaten league run to 30 matches.

Roberts curled a free-kick around the wall eight minutes from time, leaving Clark refusing the plaudits for his changes. “I don’t have an ego to massage,” he said. “If you have good players on the bench it’s easy.”

Captain Peter Clarke missed out and will see a specialist about a back problem.
