The 25-year-old was carried off on a stretcher soon after scoring the opening goal in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Watford following a collision with home goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

“Subsequent scans have confirmed that ‘Kache’ has damaged his medial collateral ligament and, ahead of a visit to a specialist on Monday afternoon, he is provisionally expected to be sidelined for an estimated 8-12 weeks,” read a club statement.

Kachunga has been a regular starter for David Wagner’s side in the Premier League this season, making a total of 19 appearances in all competitions.

The DR Congo international initially joined the Terriers on a season-long loan from German club Ingolstadt in July 2016 before the move was made permanent over the summer.

There was better news for Town regarding defender Chris Lowe, who was also forced off before half-time at Vicarage Road. Lowe hurt his foot in a challenge with Watford’s Daryl Janmaat, but scans revealed no bones have been broken and he could be available for Saturday’s trip to Southampton.

Kachunga, whose goal at the weekend was his first of the season, has thanked Town fans for their support.

“Hi fans, my first goal in the #Prem will not be followed by another one for Huddersfield in the upcoming weeks unfortunately,” Kachunga said on his Twitter account.

“That is really sad because I wanted to help my team. But now I need to focus on my rehab. Promise to comeback stronger. Thanks for your support!!!”
