Huddersfield Town: Powell eyeing best Town points haul since second-tier return

CHRIS POWELL has challenged his Huddersfield Town side to reach the sixty-point milestone between now and season’s end – and record their highest points tally since returning to the Championship.

Powell’s side earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Brighton on Tuesday night to extend their unbeaten streak to four matches with a season which had looked in danger of petering out having now been revitalised.

The point mathematically assured Town’s second-tier status for a fourth successive year, not that Powell’s thoughts are now turning to the summer holidays, with the Londoner keen for his side to build on their momentum of the past few weeks.

As it stands, Town – who have back-to-back home matches with Derby County and Blackburn Rovers before finishing the season at relegated Blackpool – have 52 points, with Powell seeking to beat their haul in the previous two campaigns.

Powell said: “I want this club to top what it has done in previous seasons.

“We got 53 points last year and I feel we can beat that, but I would love us to beat the 58 from 2012/13 by getting past 60. That is something to achieve.

“We want to finish unbeaten after two draws and two wins, which brought us eight crucial points in our season. We still have nine to play for and we will do our best to get them.

“It is good, because it keeps the season going; there is no ‘switching off’ in terms of mentality.

“I think you could see they haven’t from their efforts at Brighton.”

Nakhi Wells almost won it late on for Town, when he struck the post, but it was a night when the visitors’ defensive discipline and organisation shone through, as it has done in their recent mini upturn.

Powell added: “Joel Lynch and Mark Hudson have both been very good for us in the last four games.

“Tommy Smith dealt with (Mustapha) Carayol and (Kazenga) LuaLua too; he’s really grown into the role.

“Defensively we looked ok, with some really good interceptions, brave blocks and last-ditch headers from the defenders and midfielders.

“They all put in a top effort; I couldn’t ask for any more, apart from a winner!”
