Huddersfield Town: Steer return always on Wagner agenda

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN manager David Wagner insists the return on loan of Jed Steer from Aston Villa was always part of his planning.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is back at the John Smith’s Stadium after signing until Boxing Day from the Premier League club.

Steer left Town after making ten appearances a few days after Wagner’s own arrival. He was also not included in the starting XI against Leeds United, the firsty game after the German’s appointment though one that he watched from the stands as Mark Lillis took charge.

An ankle injury suffered by Joe Murphy in last weekend’s defeat at Sheffield Wednesday means Steer is likely to go straight into the team against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Wagner said: “We expect Murph to be out for four weeks and this is a good opportunity to bring Jed back.

“This (possibility) was part of our conversation in Spain. I spoke with Jed and said that, at that moment, I could not make a decision.

“So, for him it was better to go back to Villa. But when we had the chance to bring him back, we would do that. He has had one week’s holiday and now it is back to work.

“It is very easy for us because Jed knows us and our ideas and what we expect from our goalkeeper. He also knows the players. This was no problem for him to come back.”

Murphy’s absence means Wagner will be without a host of players against Boro. Harry Bunn is suspended, while Joel Lynch and Philip Billing are both still injured. Mustapha Carayol also has to sit out the game under the terms of his loan switch from the Riverside.
