Mounie, who turns 26 later this month, has signed a four-year deal. It has been reported in France that the striker has joined Brest - who finished 14th in the French top division last term - for a fee of €5m.

The Benin international moved to the Terriers from Montpellier in a then record £11.5m deal in the summer of 2017 following the club's historic promotion to the Premier League.

Mounie, who joined Huddersfield on the back of scoring 14 goals in 32 starts in his first full season in Ligue 1, scored nine goals in 31 matches in all competitions in his first campaign at the John Smith's Stadium in 2017-18.

His haul included a brace in Town's 3-0 opening-day win at Crystal Palace in August 2017 - in the club's first top-flight game since 1972.

In the following 2018-19 campaign, Mounie struck just twice in 32 matches, but played his part in last season's successful battle against relegation from the Championship.

Despite struggling for fitness in the opening half of the season, Mounie scored eight goals in 30 Championship games in 2019-20.

All told, Mounie scored 19 goals in 95 games in all competitions for Huddersfield.

Mounie, whose deal with the Terriers was due to run out next summer, is among several high-earning players still on the books at the John Smith's Stadium and his departure represents good business for the club.

On his exit: Town’s Head of Football Operations, Leigh Bromby, commented: “Steve was going into the final year of his contract and with that in mind this transfer made complete sense for the club.

“He has certainly created a lot of happy memories with us, so we thank him for that and wish him all the best for the future.”

Town added to their forward options in the summer after bringing in former player Danny Ward on a free transfer from Cardiff City with Fraizer Campbell representing another senior option.
