The German succeeded Chris Powell at the John Smith’s Stadium in November and has gone on to lay important groundwork for the future.

A new playing style has been implemented, while a remodelling of the squad is also under way with Chris Lowe and Michael Hefele already having been signed ahead of next season.

“We came here to try and keep us in the Championship,” said Wagner ahead of today’s final day clash with Brentford. “This we did. We also wanted to create and bring a new identity to the club. We did this.

“I feel we have created a positive atmosphere and a bit of excitement around the team. We are on the way and that is why we are happy and satisfied with the first six months. But – and this is very important to me – we are just at the beginning.

“There needs to be more steps taken in the future. We are only starting this project. Let’s go and push forward.”

Town will be without Nahki Wells for the first time under Wagner today. The Bermuda international has featured in all 31 league and cup outings since the German’s arrival but a knee injury that has been bothering the striker for several weeks means he will sit out the visit of the Bees.

Wagner is yet to decide who fills the lone frontman role, though Harry Bunn looks the most likely ahead of the other most viable candidates, Rajiv van La Parra and Karim Matmour.

“Previously Nahki and the medical staff were able to manage the injury,” explained Wagner.

“But it has now become worse and there is no point in taking a risk.

“I am confident that with the rest Nahki can now take, it will clear up by pre-season.”
