Huddersfield Town v Charlton Athletic: Woods content to fill any Town role as required

CALUM Woods hopes his versatility will earn him an extended run for Huddersfield Town.

The 26-year-old defender made his first start of the season on Saturday, helping Town pick up a clean sheet in the derby with Doncaster Rovers.

But with new signing Jazz Richards, signed on loan from Swansea City, waiting for international clearance from FIFA to come through, Woods – who had been sidelined with shoulder and thigh injuries – is not taking his place for granted.

“I was buzzing to be back in the team, to get 90 minutes, it’s been frustrating for me,” said Woods, who can play full-back or wing-back on either flank.

“After not having a pre-season, the more games I play the fitter I am going to get.

“I don’t mind where I play, wherever the manager wants me to play, I am happy to play. I can play both sides as well. You can get forward a little bit more when you are a wing-back. But sometimes it’s a harder role to play because you do more running.”

Mark Robins’s side commence a run of six games in 18 days with tonight’s visit of Charlton, who Town beat in the League Cup last month.

“We have got a few weeks now of Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday, so it’s going to be a challenge for a lot of players to play games,” said Woods.

“We have just got to take each game as it comes and look forward to Tuesday.

“We beat Charlton recently, but it’s going to be different as they changed the team around a bit.

“But we obviously know it’s going to be a tough game having played them last season.

“But at home, hopefully we can get three points.”
