Huddersfield Town v Reading - Patience is key for Carlos Corberan

Danny Ward’s return from injury has been pushed back again until a fortnight from today and January signing Danny Grant will not be rushed into the first-team squad.

When Carlos Corberan was asked over a dodgy Zoom line how soon he would throw the second Danny, signed from League of Ireland Bohemians, into his plans, he thought he was being asked about the other’s convalescence. Either way, the message was the same – Huddersfield Town have to be patient.

The new contract Corberan signed on Christmas Eve gives him the security to think more long-term but it is something he has done since he arrived in July.

So at home to Reading today, the Terriers will once more have to rely on Fraizer Campbell as their only senior specialist centre-forward.

“There are two things they (Huddersfield players) need: the first is to adapt to the ideas of the team, the second thing is the conditioning to avoid the risk of injury,” explained Corberan.

“If you are playing when you are not in the right condition, or you play more minutes than your body is ready to give, you will have problems.

“I remember, for example, Naby Sarr. He was quarantined when we signed him and there were some moments (after he came out) when we were thinking we needed a centre-back but we needed to get him into condition to finish the games because it’s important for players to have the confidence they are ready.

“It’s very important to have stability in our behaviour so every player who comes here understands very well what he has to do.

“We need to prepare the players to perform at a good level.

“It’s always important for me to measure the level of the players and I get a lot of support from the physical coaches. They have to have run a number of high-intensity metres to feel we are not taking a risk of injury and to believe we are giving the player the possibility to play in the way he has to play for us.

“We need a lot of effort to get results.

“The minute we are not getting it from one player, we suffer from a quality point of view.”
