Huddersfield Town v Rochdale - Carlos Corberan treating cup tie as a friendly

Today sees the start of a new era, Carlos Corberan’s first competitive game as a head coach in English football – but he will be treating the League Cup tie at home to Rochdale more like a final pre-season friendly than his first proper match.

The Terriers have only played twice in their Covid-restricted build-up, a win over Bradford City and a 3-3 draw with Manchester United’s Under-23s. Jonathan Hogg, Adam Diakhaby and Isaac Mbenza did not feature in either, so will use Rochdale’s visit to build up their fitness.

Steve Mounie and last season’s top-scorer Karlan Grant will not play as Corberan expects them to leave before the October 5 transfer deadline.

Corberan has a brief to play more attractive football than predecessor Danny Cowley but with so little preparation time, he has warned supporters not to expect an instant sea-change.

“It is going to take a little bit of time to implement some of my ideas,” he said.

“I am happy about all the new ideas I have been able to develop and how the players have tried to implement them.

“I am pleased the team has started to understand we have to play with a real team mentality and all go in the same direction.

“Every day has been key to feeling more comfortable about how we play as a team and every game has to help us to continue those behaviours.

“We want to focus on the players we think are going to be in the team and the players I have been working with since I arrived,” he added.

Mbenza spent 2019-20 on loan at Amiens, whose season was abandoned in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Striker Danny Ward and on-loan goalkeeper Joel Pereira are the only additions so far to a squad which lost 12 players in the summer, and Corberan refused to be drawn on speculation about a loan for Leeds United’s Robbie Gotts, or Espanyol right-back Pipa, who reports in Spain claim is close to a £500,000 move.
