Huddersfield Town v Sheffield Wednesday: Ninth-time lucky as Town seek to rewrite history once more

The Terriers are about to embark on their ninth attempt at winning promotion by the end-of-season deciders.

Only Preston North End with ten appearances have taken part in the play-offs more often than Town but the Yorkshire club is yet to taste victory on home soil, their previous eight ties at either Leeds Road or the John Smith’s Stadium having yielded five draws and three defeats.

“Another history we can make,” said Wagner, when asked about that wretched record in front of their own fans. “This season, I am not sure how many times I have been asked things like, ‘Huddersfield have never won in Newcastle since whatever’ or ‘We never get a point against Aston Villa’.

“This is another chance to show that stats are not always the truth for the future as well.”

Wednesday have twice previously competed in the play-offs and made the final on both occasions. Carlos Carvalhal’s men will fancy their chances of emulating those teams of 2005 and 2016 after enjoying the Indian sign over Wagner’s Huddersfield.

The Owls have won all four meetings since the German arrived in English football 18 months ago, in the process conceding just one goal. That came in Wagner’s very first game at the helm of Huddersfield with this season’s fixtures finishing 1-0 and 2-0 to Wednesday.

Wagner added: “It is time to change the history, this is what we like to do. There will be no surprises. Even the defeats we have had since I arrived were very narrow. Small details made the difference.

“In these three games, we didn’t get the details right and we lost. We have to make sure we are focused on us and not too much on the opponent. We have a lot of respect for Sheffield Wednesday but we want to win this leg.”
