Huddersfield Town v Southampton: Town out to prove good value against the Saints

LEE CLARK is relishing the visit of Southampton today – as it means Huddersfield Town can shake off their "big-spending" tag.

The Terriers have invested heavily in the past couple of seasons thanks to the financial support of chairman Dean Hoyle.

As a result, Huddersfield's outlay has dwarfed the vast majority of their League One rivals.

Southampton, however, are a very different club to most in the third tier with previous owner Markus Liebherr having provided significant transfer funds before his death in August.

Such was the Saints' spending under former manager Alan Pardew, that last January only nine clubs, all Premier League, made a bigger outlay than them in the transfer window.

Clark said: "It will be a strange one for us. The one day where we are not tagged as 'big-spending Huddersfield', due to the opposition having actually spent more than us.

"I have not paid much attention to Southampton's start, to be honest. It is only in the last week that I have been studying the reports of their performances in preparation for our game that I have become aware of everything.

"They look very much like every other team in the league in that they can, at times, show the very high quality they have, but they can also be beaten."

Town go into the game buoyed by back-to-back wins over Peterborough in the JP Trophy and Colchester in League One.

The 3-0 triumph in Essex was particularly impressive with U's manager John Ward graciously admitting afterwards that Town had been the best side his team had faced all season.

Huddersfield's challenge is to maintain that form and cement their place in the pack chasing promotion.

Clark, whose men sit sixth in the table, said: "The division is very tight and that won't change. From second to 17th there is a gap of just five points.

"We just have to hang on in there among the top two to keep the points gap down so that, when we are ready to pounce, it makes a difference."
