The Terriers are spoilt for choice in the No 1 spot, with Ben Hamer and Manchester United loanee Joel Pereira completing the options in the position for head coach Carlos Corberan.

Schofield kept a clean sheet as Huddersfield drew 0-0 with Coventry City – his second in four league appearances this season – on Tuesday night and is enjoying the battle for the No 1 spot at the club.

Huddersfield welcome Watford to the John Smith’s Stadium this afternoon, seeking a return to winning ways.

“You have to be on the top of your game every training session,” said Schofield.

“If I drop off then I know that Joel is right behind me and he is an excellent ’keeper.

“Everyone wants to play on a Saturday but obviously only one of you can.

“I think everyone pushing each other has increased all of our ability levels.”

The goalkeeper was injured in the early stages of the campaign and did not expect to be back to full fitness by this stage.

He added: “At the start of the season, the injury I picked up wasn’t ideal.

“I have got to thank everyone that has played their part to get me back and fit at this point in the season, I didn’t think I would be fit.

“Hats off to them for helping me with that and getting me back.

“Ben has done brilliant when he has been in and there are times I have had to step in, and for me it is about being ready when I am needed.”

At 21-years-old, Schofield is still in the early stages of his career.

He is grateful to learn from Hamer, who has over 300 career games to his name and has made the most appearances at goalkeeper for Town this campaign.

“Ben is brilliant, with the experience he brings and the person he is in the dressing room as well,” he added.

“He helps not only me, but all the young lads.

“He has been helping me with how we are playing and teaching me things he has learnt at other clubs.

“He also wants to do what is best for the team, that is what sums him up as a person.”

Watford have scored just four goals in nine away matches this season and have not scored more than once in a match while on the road.

They have only conceded four times while away from Vicarage Road and sit third in the Championship table, with Bournemouth and Norwich City occupying the two places above them in the ladder.

The top three clubs are the trio who were relegated from the top flight at the end of last season but Schofield feels that if the Terriers are at their best this afternoon, then they have the ability to get something out of the game.

“It is a good test, we have been in good form at home,” he added.

“It should be a good game. I think if we can get to the levels we have previously shown, we can get something out of it.”
