Huddersfield Town: Wells and Vaughan’s time together up front will come - Powell.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN manager Chris Powell has reassured supporters that the ‘time will come’ for Nakhi Wells and James Vaughan to be fielded in tandem together as a striking duo.

Both provided big positives for Powell in Sunday’s much-needed 2-1 Roses over Bolton Wanderers, with substitute Wells’ late winning strike taking him into double figures for the season, with the Bermudian netting his first goal since November 1 to help Town secure just their second win in nine matches.

The sight of Vaughan starting his second game in just 48 hours after an injury-ravaged first-half of the campaign was also a welcome one for Powell, who admitted he was not sure how the forward would get through the game after making his first start in three months in the 2-2 draw with Rotherham United on Boxing Day.

With Grant Holt now back at Wigan Athletic, the performances of Wells and Vaughan provided food for thought for the Town chief, with the clamour for them both to start together with more regularity likely to increase after both made an impression against Bolton.

Powell, whose decided to play one conventional frontman against Bolton with one eye on matching up with the visitors’ system, admits the pair’s forward partnership still needs fine-tuning on the training ground - but believes it can be successfully nurtured and harnessed in time.

Powell said: “We will get there with them on that, we definitely will.

“It is quite easy to say: ‘Play them together.’ But they are quite similar in what they want to do, although obviously Vaughany is a bit more robust and Nakhi does need to play with a partner.

“Their time will come and they have lots to offer as Nahki showed. We will have to work with Nahki and Vaughany to make sure whenever they play as pair, they play as a pair.

“But it can only help Vaughany getting in the minutes and help Nahki’s confidence by coming on and scoring against Bolton and that is the best position I can get those guys in.”
