Huddersfield Town's January transfer window priorities could be short-term help at either end of the field

Huddersfield Town went into last January needing a major squad revamp to fend off relegation, this time there is no such panic.

That is huge credit to Carlos Corberan, who has transformed the Terriers and their style of play on a shoestring.

An experienced centre-forward may be needed as Danny Grant makes the step up from League of Ireland to the Championship and another centre-back would not go amiss but they could both be sticking-plaster loan signings. Major surgery is not required.

Grant's arrival from Bohemians has already been confirmed – he will wear squad number 21 – but Corberan has shown with more experienced players he is meticulous about the amount of work he likes to put into his players before he allows them to play first-team football. It is not just about being up to the high physical demands of the Spaniard's intense style of play, but also having the deep tactical understanding of what they are being asked to do. As someone who has played a lot of his football out wide, Grant might have double homework.

Probably best, then, to treat anything they get this season from the player who has just turned 21 as a bonus.

The same, for different reasons, might be true of Danny Ward.

The summer signing is aiming for the January 16 trip to Watford as his return from injury, but that is a date which has already been pushed back once in a difficult first season back in West Yorkshire for him.

Ward has only started two games this season, with another six appearances from the bench. It has left Fraizer Campbell having to largely shoulder the burden of playing centre-forward on his own.

To sign another centre-forward on loan would make it easier for Ward to take his time and get up to full fitness – Corberan has shown he is not one to rush players anyway – and in the short term Grant could provide an extra option wide, where Josh Koroma is out injured.

The man most likely to step in for Koroma, though, is Rolando Aarons, the winger the Terriers had hoped to sign from Newcastle United in October, only to be beaten by the deadline. That transfer has now been completed.

There are problems mounting at centre-back too.

Richard Stearman is out for at least another month, and details of how long Christopher Schindler's knee will keep him out have been sketchy, but it is not expected to be any time soon. Throw in Tommy Elphick's tortuous recovery from the anterior cruciate ligament problem he sustained in November 2019 and the Terriers are being stretched.

Rarmani Edmonds-Green and Naby Sarr have formed a solid partnership, with youngster Romoney Crichlow having shown against Nottingham Forest he can provide back-up, but get beyond that and we are into the realms of shifting players around, with left-back Harry Toffolo a prime candidate.

This are lean times for Huddersfield having had their parachute payment cut in light of Covid-19 last season and Corberan has shown a willingness to make do and mend, but a little extra help in those key positions would be much appreciated.
