Hudson is looking up with milestone looming

MARK HUDSON is unequivocal when asked if Huddersfield Town have any lingering fears of being dragged into the relegation scrap.

“No, none at all,” said the 32-year-old, who will tomorrow reach the milestone of 400 career games against the club where it all began as an apprentice in 1999.

“We are looking up. I won’t say we are safe, that is not what we talk about. Just gaining points and getting up the league.

“We are an ambitious group and determined to finish the season on a high. We said with 10 games to go that we had a mini-season and we have started well.”

Captain Hudson’s confidence seems well placed despite the last eight games having yielded just one win.

Town stand 10 points above third-bottom Wigan Athletic with 24 points still available and host Fulham, one of the seven clubs below Chris Powell’s men in the Championship table, tomorrow.

The manner of Huddersfield’s display in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw with Norwich City will, no doubt, be behind Hudson’s insistence that the Yorkshire side can climb the table in the final weeks and then push on next term.

The central defender added: “The priority now is these eight games and picking up points. But, going forward, we have gained plenty of experience this season that can only help us in the future.

“If we can keep hold of the younger players and add a few in the summer then this club can only go forward.

“If we can add wisely and keep this group together, I would like to see us in the top half of the table.”

On reaching the landmark of 400 career appearances tomorrow, Hudson added: “I wasn’t aware of it being my 400th until being told this week. It is a milestone for me and one I am looking forward to.

“It is weird that the game should be against Fulham but, as a rule, I am not one to count games. Just the matches themselves.

“We can put Fulham in trouble and that is what we are looking to do. Regardless of how Wigan get on, we are looking to get on the front foot.”

Striker James Vaughan is out suspended tomorrow following his second yellow over his goal celebration against Norwich and likely to be replaced by a fit-again Nahki Wells, but full-back Jack Robinson has returned to parent club QPR for his knee injury to be assessed.
