Hull City 4 Bristol City 0: Tigers in goals spree at KC Stadium

A rejuvenated Hull ended a five-game winless streak to get their Sky Bet Championship promotion hopes back on track with a much-needed 4-0 victory over Bristol City at the KC Stadium.

Goals from Curtis Davies and Robert Snodgrass gave the hosts a two-goal lead before Mo Diame and Sone Aluko sealed a resounding win as Steve Bruce’s side, who had only won two of their previous nine, closed the gap for an automatic promotion spot to four points.

Hull were unchanged from their 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough before the international break while the visitors were looking to move clear of the relegation zone following their resurgence under boss Lee Johnson, with the Robins winning six of their last nine games, including a 6-0 drubbing of bottom club Bolton.

Diame had a glorious opportunity to put Hull in front after eight minutes as the Senegal international found space between Bristol City’s defence before Marlon Pack made a last-ditch tackle to keep the score goalless.

Snodgrass’ tricky feet would then cause havoc inside the Robins’ area, leading to the opener inside 14 minutes. Davies, who recently signed a new contract extension with the East Yorkshire club, climbed between two Bristol City defenders to head past Richard O’Donnell.

Stoke loanee Peter Odemwingie should have equalised immediately as he blasted Adam Matthews’ byline cross over the bar from six yards out.

O’Donnell produced a brilliant point-blank save to keep the visitors in the game after 23 minutes. A slick passing exchange between Aluko and Andy Robertson saw the latter tee up Sam Clucas but the Bristol City goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic reaction stop.

The hosts were almost punished for a momentary lapse in defence on the half hour mark as Jonathan Kodjia pounced on Lee Tomlin’s fumbled strike only for his goal to be disallowed for offside. But the Tigers brought a raucous KC Stadium crowd to their feet as they doubled their lead moments before the break.

Aluko’s lofted cross set up an on-rushing Snodgrass, who planted home a precise header to give O’Donnell no chance in the Bristol City goal.

The Scotsman was close to claiming his second minutes later after a scramble inside the Robins box saw the ball fall to the midfielder but was denied by a fine O’Donnell save.

Diame almost sent the KC into a frenzy as the midfielder spotted the Bristol City goalkeeper off his line but his ambitious effort from the centre circle sailed wide.

But the Senegalese man put the game out of reach with a glorious third after 70 minutes. A neat spell of passing saw Diame jink past a Bristol City defender before he drilled home from 25 yards.

Aluko capped off a man-of-the-match performance with a fourth before the post denied Bristol City substitute Luke Freeman late on.
