Hull City boss Steve Bruce on England coach '˜shortlist'

Reports have suggested that Bruce, 55, will be among the list of candidates spoken to by the FA about the vacant Three Lions role.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce remains the bookmakers’ favourite, with Jurgen Klinsmann and Eddie Howe also figuring prominently in the betting.

Bruce, whose credentials for the top post have been endorsed by England legend Alan Shearer, said: “It’s highly flattering and I’m honoured to be linked with it. Whether or not it goes any further than that… It’s the pinnacle isn’t it?

“To manage your country, there’s no bigger job. (But) It’s all speculation.”

On the merits of Bruce, who guided the Tigers back to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs last season, Shearer added: “I get that there is not a huge list of suitable English candidates. But there are people out there who should be considered and spoken to.

“Why wouldn’t they give it to Steve Bruce? He would be my pick. Bruce has worked in English football all his life.

“He knows the game inside out and is widely respected. He has played at the highest level with Manchester United.”
