Hull City manager Grant McCann has Wembley in sights again

It was back in 2014 in his playing days at Peterborough United that the Hull City manager was afforded one of the most special days of his career in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, as it was formerly called.

McCann and his Posh team-mates helped the London Road outfit secure their first piece of silverware in front of over 35,000 spectators at Wembley.

The Northern Irishman would dearly like to sample the experience as a manager in the competition, now called the Papa John’s Trophy.

Victory over a Crewe side who were beaten 1-0 in East Yorkshire earlier this season in League One would make that dream that step closer for Hull, who are the sole White Rose side remaining in the competition.

McCann, who is likely to make a raft of changes for the tie, which kicks off at 5.30pm, said: “We want to try and progress in competitions and if we win, it will put us into the quarter-finals and two games away from Wembley. That is our mindset.

“It is another good footballing game. Crewe, as people saw when they came to the KCOM, want to get the ball down and play.

“They are not dissimilar to the teams we have played in our last three games in Ipswich, Doncaster and Oxford and we are looking forward to it.”

Saturday’s emphatic 5-1 victory at struggling Weymouth was the first time that the Shaymen had won back-to-back games since February.
