The Tigers have gone into the new year window hoping to add to their squad quickly, but must now decide if they need to force the issue with a bid for Adelakun, or sign a replacement.

The 24-year-old was due to see out his Robins contract at the KCOM Stadium, and was open to the idea of making his stay permanent when he became a free agent in the summer. He scored three goals in 17 appearances for Hull, including one in Saturday's 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

But, with injuries hitting their squad, the Championship side have exercised their right to bring him back early.

The issue is exacerbated because of a contract stand-off with fellow wide player Keane Lewis-Potter.

The teenager has not started since the FA Cup second-round win over Fleetwood Town because doing so will trigger a payment. The Tigers have offered a new contract, but coach Grant McCann says Lewis-Potter has rejected because he does not want to be tied to the club beyond 2022, when his current deal expires.

“We’re pleased with Haks, he’s a good lad and another good character who has done quite well,” said McCann recently.

“Haks will probably tell you himself that he should have more goals and assists. I think if you put it into context; you look at his performances and the games he’s played, he’s predominantly played in a team that’s not been beaten.

“He brings us something different. We recruited him to the club because of what he can do, the positions he can play left right or as a ten, we like that flexibility.”
