The 21-year-old's loan spell at the KCOM Stadium ended on June 30, and the player's parent club are unwilling to extend that deal.

The terms of the arrangement that saw Wilks join the Tigers included a buy-out clause, though the deadline for finalising a permanent move to East Yorkshire passed at midnight on Tuesday.

City are still locked in talks with the Tykes, however, with head coach Grant McCann revealing that the club has been granted additional time to conclude their business.

"We're still in talks with Barnsley so hopefully we'll have a bit of news over the next couple of days," he said.

"Because there's an option in the contract, there is an extension until, I believe, tomorrow [Thursday] so hopefully we'll know a wee bit more maybe today or tomorrow."

"If the deal goes through today or tomorrow then he [Wilks] will be available [to play against Middlesbrough on Thursday]."

Wilks made 12 appearances in all competitions for Hull after arriving in January, scoring three goals.
