Hull City: Tigers will continue their attempt to snare Chris Coleman

The Tigers, who are resigned to losing Mohamed Diame to Newcastle United in a £4.5m deal after the midfielder was photographed undergoing a medical on Tyneside, were hoping to name Steve Bruce’s successor by today at the latest.

An initial five-man shortlist – drawn up in the wake of Bruce speaking to the Football Association last month about the then vacancy in charge of the national team – had been reduced following deliberation among the club hierarchy over the weekend.

Hull then approached the FA of Wales for permission to speak to their manager, but this was flatly rejected yesterday. “Everybody at the FAW are fully focused on the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign,” said a statement from the government body.

Despite being rebuffed, Hull remain hopeful that a deal can be thrashed out and that Coleman, who led Wales to the last four of Euro 2016 after signing a new two-year deal in May, can still be lured to the KCOM Stadium.

If that does not prove possible, however, the Tigers will turn to either Gianfranco Zola or Roberto Martinez, who both spoke to club officials last week.

The hold-up is a further blow for Hull, who yesterday flew out to Austria ahead of a two-game tour. Just 10 days remain until the Premier League season kicks off and with no new signings yet on board, the Yorkshire club are seriously lagging behind in terms of preparation.

Last night, Hull City Supporters Trust confirmed a protest similar to the red cards brandished at several games late last term will be staged at the opening day clash with Leicester on August 13.

Diame’s decision to speak to Newcastle in the wake of a £4.5m release clause in his contract being triggered came as a disappointment to Hull, who had indicated a desire to offer a new three-year deal to the Senegal midfielder.

The scorer of last May’s promotion-clinching winner at Wembley in the Championship play-off final, Diame has a proven Premier League pedigree.

The 29-year-old underwent a medical at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, even posing for photos with excited Newcastle supporters.

Another player who had hoped to be on the move from a Yorkshire club is Charlie Taylor, but Leeds United have rejected his transfer request.

The 22-year-old is in the final 12 months of his contract and has been attracting interest from the Premier League, Burnley and West Bromwich Albion understood to have been keeping tabs on Taylor’s progress along with Middlesbrough.

United president Massimo Cellino recently accused Taylor and his agent of refusing to enter into talks over a new deal, a statement repeated by chief executive Ben Mansford last week.

Taylor is understood to have submitted a transfer request on Sunday, but this was turned down flatly.

“Further to recent speculation regarding Charlie Taylor,” a Leeds statement read, “the club can confirm that a transfer request from Charlie was received over the weekend.

“Garry Monk and club president Massimo Cellino agreed at the start of the transfer window that Charlie would not be sold and, therefore, the transfer request has been formally rejected.

“The club has every confidence that Charlie will continue to conduct himself properly and play his part this season as the club pushes towards the top of the Championship.”

Taylor was named Player of the Year in 2015-16 and is regarded as one of the brightest talents outside the Premier League. United, who are understood to have enquired about former Hull defender Jack Hobbs, yesterday confirmed the loan capture of Spain international Pablo Hernandez from Qatar club Al-Arabi.

Monk managed the 31-year-old at Swansea City and he sees United’s seventh summer signing as a major coup.

Hernandez, who spent last year on loan with La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, has another year left at Al-Arabi, but the six-month loan switch to Elland Road includes provision for a permanent move.

Also arriving in Yorkshire yesterday was experienced defender Kelvin Wilson, who has joined Rotherham United from Nottingham Forest.

Rotherham expect to follow his capture with a season-long loan for Celtic play-maker Scott Allan.
