Bradford City set to reap the rewards from Wisdom’s latest move

BRADFORD CITY were last night waiting to discover the size of their latest windfall from selling Andre Wisdom to Liverpool as the full-back prepared to finalise a loan switch to Premier League new boys Norwich City.

The defender, now 22, moved to Anfield from the Bantams as a 14-year-old in a transfer that has so far earned the Yorkshire side around £350,000.

Now, that sum is set to swell further due to a sell-on clause inserted in the transfer – which initially saw Liverpool pay a fee of £50,000 – that entitles Bradford to 20 per cent of any future sale or loan agreement.

With Norwich reported to have agreed to pay around £1m to take Wisdom, who recently signed a new four year contract at Anfield, on loan for the season, that means City’s windfall should be around £200,000.

The money – which will be paid across the course of the 2015-16 season – is likely to be ploughed straight into the transfer budget of Phil Parkinson. Having signed Nathan Clarke on a one-year deal earlier this week, the Bantams chief is closing in on his main defensive target. Talks have been on-going over the mystery man for more than a week.

City are also tracking several other targets and The Yorkshire Post has been told progress is expected regarding a number of new faces arriving before the season-opener on August 8.

As for Wisdom, his impending move to Norwich is also understood to include an additional payment to Liverpool should the Norfolk club stay up.

That would again benefit Bradford, who on top of the original £50,000 fee have been paid two instalments of £50,000 when the defender signed his first two contracts as a scholar at Anfield along with another one-off payment of £25,000.

City then received another £100,000 when he reached 10 first team appearances, while two more games for the Reds will trigger another £100,000 due to it taking him to 20 overall.

A £40,000 loan fee was also paid last season for Wisdom’s loan stay at West Bromwich Albion.

Should he be sold before reaching 20 games for Liverpool, the Bantams will still receive £80,000 – covering £10,000 for each of the eight appearances he has made since reaching double figures.

On top of that, the League One club will be due 20 per cent of any profit on the money that has already been received.

City have sold several youngsters to Premier League clubs down the years, the most lucrative being Fabian Delph as a 12-year-old to Leeds United. His subsequent £8m move to Aston Villa brought Bradford around £1.15m.

Bradford officials hoped to match this when Tom Cleverley, a youngster at Bradford, left Manchester United.

However, despite an £8m switch to Everton being touted a year ago, Cleverley went out on loan last season before leaving on a free this summer.

Elsewhere in Yorkshire, James Chester yesterday completed his £8m switch to West Bromwich Albion from Hull City after rejecting a late attempt by Leicester City to hijack the deal.

Rodolph Austin, meanwhile, has been left frustrated by a new FA directive designed to toughen up work permit rules on foreign players amid interest from a number of Championship clubs that included Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough.

The Jamaican international spent three years at Leeds before being released at the end of last season. Austin’s agent, Darryl Powell, said: “There were six big clubs who wanted to sign him but we have found out that the new rules meant they won’t allow him a new work permit, which is a big disappointment.”
