Bruce targets Campbell for return to Tigers

The club’s owners yesterday gave the Tigers’ chief their full backing to invest during the transfer window to help bolster their chances of a return to the Premier League.

Bruce is certainly grateful of that support but does not see the need for major surgery considering his in-form side are currently sitting joint-third in the Championship ahead of tomorrow’s visit from Huddersfield Town.

However, he admits he would like to see his trio of recent loan recruits – Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale, Manchester United midfielder Robert Brady and Sunderland schemer David Meyler – pen permanent contracts.

“I’ll be speaking to the respective managers over the next few weeks,” said Bruce.

“I can’t really worry about whether or not they’d be called back, but I would love to secure all three if it was possible. I don’t know if there’s any chance of that, but it’s something that we’re looking in to.

“I don’t think our squad needs a lot of work on it.

“I’ve always said any business that you do has to be for the right reasons and they’ve got to be the right ones.

“I don’t want to bring in players who are no better than what we’ve got.

“You need to add something to the squad and I’d like to think all the ones we’ve brought in have done that at the right time.

“I won’t be going out and getting players for the sake of it.

“If there’s a good one out there who could make a big difference, then that would be terrific.”

Sunderland forward Campbell, who scored 15 goals in 34 league games while on loan at Hull in 2007-08, could certainly fit that bill.

Bruce is a big fan of the 25-year-old having paid Manchester United £3.5m for his services in 2009 when in charge at the Stadium of Light.

Fraizer made his England debut against Holland in February, but is currently out of favour at the Premier League club.

“It’s never easy to talk about players when they belong to someone else,” Bruce admitted.

“I took him to Sunderland for a lot of money and, a bit like David Meyler, he’s had a tough time with injuries.

“I’m mindful of the fact how well he did here and I like him both as a player and a boy.

“If it was possible then we’d certainly have a look at it, but I’m not sure it is possible.

“We’ll just have to see how things pan out.”
