Davies hoping to catch Hodgson’s eye if he watches Hull

HULL CITY central defender Curtis Davies admits his last chance of earning a full England cap could lay at the feet of team-mates Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore.

The £2.5m summer arrival, 28, has arguably been the Tigers’ stand-out player so far this term, but feels it will take a re-run of what happened to him at Aston Villa five years ago for him to be handed a Three Lions call-up.

Then national boss Fabio Capello was alerted to talents his while watching two of his Villa colleagues in a Premier League outing.

Davies, whose closest call to a senior cap came when he was an unused substitute in the 2-1 friendly win against Germany in Berlin in November, said: “Obviously I’d love to play for my country, but it’s not really something I’ve thought about.

“Especially being in a Hull City shirt, I think that would be very difficult.

“I couldn’t tell you what the manager (Roy Hodgson) thinks. I think my only chance would be if the manager decided to come and watch Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore a lot and see what they are doing. And then I might surprise him; because I don’t think he will come here to watch me, if I am honest.

“If he came down to watch those two and I managed to impress him, that’s good. Because I am sure when I did get into the squad with (Fabio) Capello, he wasn’t sent down to watch me, but Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor – and I managed to catch his eye.

“If I can do that with this manager, I’d be happy.”

He quipped: “I am hoping that Tom ups his game, so that the England manager can watch him and I can turn his head! But (seriously), it’s not something I’ve really thought about, although it’s something I aspire to.”

Hull chief Steve Bruce admits that losing Robert Koren to injury for up to two months represents a blow he could have done without.

Scans have revealed that the Slovenian international fractured a bone in his foot in their Premier League opener at Chelsea on August 17 after the midfielder complained of soreness after last weekend’s clash with Cardiff.

To compound matters, the Tigers will also be without summer signing Maynor Figueroa for tomorrow’s clash at Newcastle.

The Honduran international has returned to his homeland on compassionate leave, while also suffering from a groin niggle.

Paul McShane (hamstring) also misses out – further depleting the Tigers’ defensive reserves – with Bruce revealing that Egyptian loan striker Gedo, whose work permit was granted earlier this week, is a couple of weeks away from full fitness.

On the news regarding Koren, Bruce said: “It’s a blow to us because we know he can play at this level.

“He’s been terrific since I came into the job.”

Bruce has revealed that Barnsley have enquired about signing left-back Joe Dudgeon on loan, but any potential move has been put on ice with the 22-year-old having picked up a slight hamstring strain.
