The 25-year-old, Player of the Year for the Terriers in 2013-14, is wanted by both Boro and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Last weekend saw noises come out of the Amex suggesting that the Seagulls were on the verge of capturing their man for around £1.5m.

That, however, was well wide of the mark with The Yorkshire Post understanding Boro look a much more likely destination if Town decide to part with a player who has less than a year remaining on his contract.

For now, though, Clayton, who played 80 minutes in Saturday’s friendly defeat to Oldham Athletic, remains very much a Terriers player and is likely to feature against Newcastle United at the John Smith’s Stadium tonight.

Clayton joined Huddersfield, who are expected to add Leigh Bromby to their Academy coaching staff following his recent departure from Leeds United, in a £350,000 deal two years ago and has made 94 appearances, scoring 11 goals.

Meanwhile, a surge in demand has led to Hull City having just 500 tickets left for Thursday’s historic first home game in Europe.

The Tigers drew 0-0 in Slovakia last week against FK AS Trencin to leave the third qualifying round tie finely balanced ahead of the return.

Initially, City officials had opted to sell tickets – priced at £10 adults and £5 concessions, with a free programme also included – in just the West and East Stands.

However, with City now needing to win to progress to the play-off qualifying round, the KC Stadium ticket office has been inundated with applications.

Just 500 tickets remained at close of business last night, the majority of which are in the West Stand Upper tier. A handful also remain in the East Stand. The news that the tie is heading for a sell-out will delight manager Steve Bruce, who had called for supporters to turn out in force after watching his side held to a goalless draw in the first leg by the Slovakian League runners-up.

Trencin warmed up for Thursday’s second leg by making it three league wins in as many outings this season when they beat Trnava 2-0 at home last Sunday to move up to second place behind leaders MSK Zilina, who are a point ahead having played a game more.
