Family tragedy led Hull City player to take drugs claim

JAKE LIVERMORE was reportedly struggling with the death of his child when he tested positive for cocaine last season.

The Hull City midfield player tested positive for the Class A drug after the Tigers’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in April and was suspended pending a Football Association hearing.

It is understood that Hull were fully aware Livermore was battling difficult personal circumstances and it is claimed that his failed test came just days after the results of an inquest into the death of his baby.

Livermore remains suspended by Hull, who will not take questions on the 25-year-old until the FA investigation is resolved.

A spokesman said: “The club are unable to comment on Jake Livermore until his case with the Football Association concludes.”

A failed in-competition test for a ‘social’ drug such as cocaine carries a maximum two-year ban.

The 25-year-old originally joined Hull on loan from Tottenham for the 2013/14 season, making the deal permanent in an £8million deal last summer.

He has one England cap, having appeared in a 2-1 friendly win over Italy in 2012.
