Hull 3 Ipswich 1: Barmby hails impact of bit-part players as he prepares to sign up

Hull caretaker manager Nick Barmby declared Tom Cairney’s first-half strike against Ipswich as the goal of the FA Cup third round after his side progressed with a 3-1 win at the KC Stadium.

Cairney produced a sublime finish to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute, catching Arran Lee-Barrett just off his line from 25 yards for his first of a stop-start season.

Barmby used the match to give some of his fringe players a run out, making seven changes in total, and was delighted to see Cairney take his opportunity with an effort he believes is as good as any scored across the country.

The 3-1 win earns them a home tie against Crawley in round four.

“It was really good to get 90 minutes from Tom today. When you look at Tom’s goal, our second, that’s what he can do,” said Barmby. “It’s just great technique and you probably won’t see a better goal in the FA Cup in this third round. I was very pleased.”

After three consecutive 1-0 defeats in the Championship, Barmby was also pleased to see his side looking confident in front of goal again, with Aaron Mclean opening the scoring after 27 minutes and Cameron Stewart finishing things off with a clinical effort in added time.

“I believe in what they can do and we kept on saying that it would definitely come,” he said. “The last three games have been a mix of being unlucky and snatching at last-minute finishes. Here, our first was a fantastic goal on the break and Cameron Stewart got his reward with a goal too.

“I’m pleased to get the win and well pleased to score three at home.”

Fans favourite Barmby, who has said he will no longer play for the club, also had good news for the supporters, confirming he expects to sign a permanent deal as manager in the next 24 hours.

“Hopefully everything will be sorted by Monday,” he said when asked about contract talks with the club.

Ipswich, who briefly got themselves back into the match when substitute Jason Scotland scored from close range in the 57th minute, left their manager Paul Jewell deeply unimpressed.

They are now winless in four matches and Jewell bemoaned his team’s poor defending as the primary cause: “We conceded two bad goals, then we got ourselves back in it but their third goal, you just have to see it to believe it,” he said. “That sums us up. That’s why we are where we are in the league, because of that calamitous defending. If you saw these goals at a lot lower standard than this you’d be scratching your head.

“We’re not defending individually or as a group. It’s almost as though they’re taking it in turns to make a mistake.”

Jewell said he was now looking to shore up his back four with a move for Leicester City’s out-of-favour centre-half Sean St Ledger.
