Hull City fail in bid to break club record again in pursuit of Irish forward Long

Long seemed set to join the Premier League newcomers before the close of the summer transfer window at 11pm for a fee surpassing the signing of Tom Huddlestone for £5.25m in mid-August.

The Tigers had been given permission to talk to Long yesterday afternoon after having a bid accepted for the 26-year-old, and he left the Republic of Ireland’s training camp to travel to East Yorkshire to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.

But Baggies boss Steve Clarke pulled the plug on the deal after failing to sign Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who spent last season with the club on loan but last night moved to Everton.

The Tigers were set to soften the blow with a move for Egyptian forward Gedo, 28, on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a £1.8m permanent move.

Meanwhile, Hull allowed winger Cameron Stewart to join Charlton Athletic on loan until January.

The only other piece of business at the club saw young left-back Conor Townsend sign for Carlisle on a month’s loan.

West Brom had been mindful they could potentially lose Long for nothing next summer when his contract at The Hawthorns expires,.

They had decided to open the door to Long’s departure having lined up rival deals to bring in Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon and Everton’s Victor Anichebe.

But Lukaku’s decision to join Everton on loan meant Long is needed by Clarke.

Other deadline day action saw Barnsley take their tally of window signings to 11 – equalling the number of arrivals at York City – after bringing in Crystal Palace defender Peter Ramage on a season-long loan.

On the outgoing front, the Reds parted company with goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, who left the club by mutual consent.

Sheffield United also enjoyed a busy day of activity, who brought in young Premier League duo Florent Cuvelier and Harry Bunn to follow on from the capture of Jose Baxter late last week.

The pair could make their debuts in tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern section first-round tie at Scunthorpe United tonight, with their arrivals taking the number of new recruits in the summer transfer window at Bramall Lane to nine.

Twenty-year-old Belgian midfielder Cuvelier has joined from Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year deal.

Cuvelier spent last season on loan at Walsall and Peterborough United, and failed to make a first-team appearance for the Potters.

Bunn, also 20, has joined on a 28-day youth loan from Manchester City, having had previous loan spells at Rochdale, Preston North End, Oldham Athletic and Crewe Alexandra.

The Blades, set to announce further details regarding investment from Dubai-based backers – who have agreed to purchase 50 per cent of plc chairman Kevin McCabe’s interest in the club – were also in the market for former Sheffield Wednesday forward Leon Clarke, but saw an approach rejected by Coventry City.

Huddersfield Town had a quiet deadline day, with the only piece of business seeing Jack Hunt complete his move to top-flight Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £2m.

On his move to Palace – who have brought in 13 players this summer – Hunt tweeted: “Absolutely delighted to have signed for Crystal Palace. New challenge in my life and I can’t wait to get started.”

Doncaster Rovers did complete one expected piece of business, with Richie Wellens agreeing terms to stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until January.

Rotherham United midfielder David Noble has joined Cheltenham Town on loan until January.

Deadline day passed without any activity at Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and York City, with Bradford City extending keeper Connor Ripley’s loan for the rest of the year.
