Hull City, Leeds United and Harrogate Town in EFL Trophy action

Grant McCann will pick “a fresh team” to take on Leicester City Under-21s in tonight’s Football League Trophy, but the Hull City manager is anxious to keep up the momentum of Saturday’s penalty shoot-out victory over Sunderland.

It took spot-kicks to squeeze past the Black Cats in the League Cup first round, but after just two Championship wins in 2020, it was important.

“We want to keep that mentality,” said McCann, when asked what his approach would be in tonight’s home game. “Yes the league is our bread and butter this season but we’ll try to pick a fresh team to win it.”

There was more positive news yesterday when minutes of last month’s meeting with the supporters’ committee revealed there is still interest in buying the club from its unpopular owners.

“Surprisingly we do still have interest,” said vice-chairman Ehab Allam. “We are in a different league, and the price is lower, and we still have lots of money to come from the sale of Jarrod Bowen (to West Ham United in January). Compared to some other clubs we are in good shape.”

Harrogate Town are expected to make minimal changes as they follow their League Cup debut with a first Trophy match.

Manager Simon Weaver hinted he would be reluctant to make widescale changes if his team performed well at Prenton Park, where Town knocked Tranmere Rovers out on penalties. Tonight they are at fellow League Two side Grimsby Town.

Leeds United’s Under-21s also make their debut, at Accrington Stanley.

The top two in each four-team group progress to the knockout stages. The final is at Wembley.
