Winger Ahmed Elmohamady sparked a panic-stricken search when the wallet containing his travel visa went missing the day before he was due to fly.

The wallet found itself safely back into his hands after being handed in 50 miles away to Scarborough Police, when Mr Elmohamady hired the taxi to transport it home.

An unnamed source said how suave Elmohamady, an Egyptian national, even negotiated a knock-down £50 fare for the cab.

The source said: “It was a real race against time. He was obviously desperate to get it back in time for his flight.

“He will be earning a fortune, so I’m sure the fare didn’t hurt him that much, but he must have been really worried when it vanished.

“It was lost in Hull apparently, so God only knows how it’s ended up in Scarborough.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed his wallet was handed in, and that it contained no cash.

Although it is not known where the player was jetting off to, his team are far from high flying as they languish in the bottom of the league after a crumbling 3-0 defeat at West Ham on Sunday.
