The Tigers chief, a boyhood Toon fan, has been strongly linked with the vacancy at St James’ Park.

However, in his first interview since Alan Pardew’s departure from Tyneside, Bruce insisted he remains fully committed to City.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton, Bruce said: “People know I was a Newcastle supporter as a boy and it (a possible return) has been regurgitated since I was 22 years old. I am linked every time for that reason. It is very flattering, I am a Geordie.

But I have a job to do here. I have had two and a half years here and am comitted to seeing it through. I am fully focused on one thing - and that is to stay here and try to get us out of trouble.

“I am determined to see it through.”

Asked if that meant he had ruled himself out of the running for Newcastle, Bruce, celebrating his 54th birthday today, replied: “Yes. I have a job to do here.”
