The Tigers chief refused to divulge which areas of his squad he is looking to bolster, but did reveal that he has already made contact with his priority targets.

City currently sit just four points off the top of League One with a game in hand over leaders Lincoln, and McCann is planning to use the early weeks of the New Year to mould his group into one better equipped to go on and push for the title.

“It’s an opportunity to get stronger. An opportunity to bring in some players that could make us stronger and give us the best opportunity to have a push at the top end of the league,” he said.

“I’m not going to come out and tell you that we need this, that or the other. That’s no good for the confidence of the players that are here, so we’ll keep that to ourselves.

“What I can tell the fans is that we’re working very hard to try and make us stronger, to make us better moving forward into the second half of the season.

“We’ve identified people and targets who we’d like to bring in and I’ve personally spoken to those targets. We’d love to get it done early.”

Significantly improving City’s squad will not be straightforward given the constraints of the League One salary cap, and McCann has accepted he will likely have to move some players out in order to be able to strengthen.

“It’s very hard in terms of the salary cap but it is what it is and it’s the same for every team in the league,” the Hull chief added. “We have to juggle things around, maybe move some people out to bring in some in. We have a little bit of room in there, but not a lot in terms of the cap.

“It’s a bit of a juggling act and I’m sure every club is the same, we want to make us stronger, and that’s the most important thing.

“The recruitment was great in the summer and it has to be great again in January. I’m sure we’ll have a good push.”
