Hull turning their attentions from Schmeichel to McGregor

HULL CITY have switched goalkeeping targets to former Rangers No 1 Allan McGregor after Leicester City indicated their desire to block any renewed attempts to sign Kasper Schmeichel.

The Tigers, who won promotion to the Premier League, are understood to have agreed a fee of £1.8m with Turkish side Besiktas for 31-year-old McGregor and are currently taking to the Scottish international and his representatives. A deal could be finalised late today or tomorrow.

Despite some reports suggesting that McGregor has already signed for Hull, discussions remain ongoing, although the fate of the transfer, one way or the other, will be decided shortly.

The Tigers elected to move for McGregor after seeing two bids knocked back for ex-Leeds United goalkeeper Schmeichel.

With Hull unwilling to pay more than £2m for Schmeichel, who will be out of contract next summer, and the Foxes making clear their desire to keep the player, Hull boss Steve Bruce has now firmed up his interest in McGregor.

The Edinburgh-born goalkeeper was one of a number of alternative options for Bruce, also linked with the likes of Fulham duo Mark Schwarzer and David Stockdale and Aston Villa’s Shay Given.

Late last month, Hull officials confirmed that McGregor was on the club’s radar, but said that no transfer was imminent.

West Ham were also linked with a move for McGregor earlier this summer, but their recent signing of Real Betis goalkeeper Adrian effectively ended their interest.

Along with their goalkeeping department, bolstering his striking ranks remains Bruce’s other priority, with Celtic’s Gary Hooper his No 1 target.

The Scottish Premier League champions turned down a £4m plus offer on Wednesday, but the Tigers are being tipped to continue their interest.

Hooper will be out of contract at Parkhead next summer and a bid of £5m with some add-ons is likely to tempt them into cashing in on a player who could leave the club for nothing in 12 months.

York City have snapped up former Burnley striker Wes Fletcher and Blackpool goalkeeper Chris Kettings.

Fletcher, 22, was released by the Clarets at the end of the season, having previously spent loan spells at Grimsby Town, Stockport County, Accrington Stanley, Crewe Alexandra and Yeovil Town.

Kettings, 20, capped by Scotland Under-19s and Under-20s, arrives on a one-year loan.

York have also joined the race to sign Southend United defender Ryan Cresswell.

The former Rotherham United captain is also on the wanted list of League Two rivals Fleetwood Town.

Chesterfield are also interested in Cresswell, who is keen to return north.
