The fee is way down from what Hull paid Everton to secure Jelavic’s services in Januart 2014, when they forked out £7m to land him.

But with the Tigers endeavouring to cut costs in the wake of relegation, with Jelavic still on weekly wages of £30,000 despite a thirty per cent pay cut, the East Yorkshiremen were willing to take a hit on the fee they received to get the player off their books.

Several other players, including Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone, have clauses in their deals enabling them to leave following relegation.

Hull are bracing themselves for further interest in several players, including the aforesaid pair, Mo Diame and Ahmed Elmohamady, with the latter interesting Leicester City and QPR among others.

Jelavic’s signing completed a busy morning for the Hammers, who have also completed the season-long loan capture of Chelsea winger Victor Moses.

The Londoners have already brought in Barcelona midfielder Alex Song on a similar deal.
