Nicklas Bendtner scored his first Arsenal goal since March 2011 as the Gunners stayed in control at the top of the Premier League with their latest triumph.

The Denmark striker – recalled to the starting line-up to give leading forward Olivier Giroud a rest and who last started a league game for Arsenal three seasons ago - took just 90 seconds to get on the scoresheet for the first time since an FA Cup tie against Leyton Orient in March 2011.

The Gunners’ victory saw them maintain a four-point lead over second-placed Chelsea, who won 4-3 at relegation battlers Sunderland.

The Gunners eventually doubled their lead at the start of the second half, when Ozil converted from close range after lovely interchange of passes with Ramsey at the edge of the penalty area.

Arsenal - looking to keep ahead of their title rivals - had chances to extend the lead before half-time with a low, 20-yard shot from Ramsey tipped away by the Hull keeper.

Hull - who had beaten Liverpool 3-1 at home on Sunday - never looked like mounting a fightback as Arsene Wenger’s men continued to lay down a marker for a long overdue sustained assault on the Premier League crown.

Leeds striker McCormack bundled home his seventh goal in five matches in the 15th minute and then saw his 77th-minute free-kick curl inside the far post for a game-clinching second to lift Brian McDermott’s side up to seventh place in the table.

Elsewhere, super-sub Connor Sammon broke the hearts of 10-man Middlesbrough with a late winner as Derby stretched their winning run to four matches to cement fourth place in the table.

Steve McClaren won the League Cup and reached a UEFA Cup final during his tenure as Middlesbrough boss and, in his first managerial game against his old club, he saw his new team emerge somewhat lucky winners as the Teessiders’ brave resistance was finally broken.
