Man the (beer) pumps - there’s a Hull match on!

ORGANISERS of the Hull Real Ale and Cider Festival have issued an urgent appeal for volunteers to help them serve the thousands of pints that will be consumed over the next two days.

This year’s event, which gets underway at Hull’s Holy Trinity Church today, will be the biggest in its 35-year history and could see 8,000 pints sunk before time is called at 8pm on Saturday.

But as Friday night clashes with Hull City’s key Championship clash with Bristol City, a number of volunteers have opted for football instead, leaving their colleagues short-handed.

Organiser Stewart Campbell said: “Last year we had 47 volunteers; not enough. We’ve got 52 this year but it’s twice as big and they have arranged the Hull City game for Friday night so we are losing half a dozen.”

Anyone wanting to help out does not need experience of working behind a bar but must be a member of the Campaign for Real Ale.

Drinkers will have a total of 120 real ales, 27 ciders, and 16 world beers to choose from.

The Rev Matt Woodcock, Holy Trinity’s pioneer minister, said: “It’s bigger and better than ever and hosting the festival for the first time last year was one of the most significant things we’ve done in recent times, opening up all kinds of possibilities and new links and introducing new people to the church.”
