McShane demands more after late KC call-up

FRUSTRATED Hull City centre-back Paul McShane made his 200th career league start and then insisted: “I want to be playing more.”

The Irishman was drafted in late for Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to high-flying Southampton after Alex Bruce “nicked” his hamstring with the last kick of Friday’s final training session.

It was only McShane’s fifth game of the campaign and his first league outing since the 2-1 loss at Aston Villa in August.

With captain Curtis Davies and former England centre-half Michael Dawson at the KC Stadium, too, the 28-year-old has seen his game time limited.

After Hull fell to Victor Wanyama’s stunning second-minute effort, McShane said: “I found out just when I arrived at the stadium I was in.

“It’s always frustrating when you don’t play. It was a decent performance and we needed to change the shape and the tactics to chase the game.

“I was pleased with how I went but I want to be playing more.”

Asked if he thinks he will get more opportunities now with Bruce, according to his father and Tigers manager Steve, having “no chance” of facing Burnley on Saturday, he said: “You just never know. I wasn’t expecting to be taken out of the team when I was so you just never know.”

Hull, who fell behind after a glaring error from third-choice goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic, became second-placed Saints’ 10th victim in 11 games.

McShane, who initially joined Hull on loan from Sunderland in 2008, said: “It was disappointing to concede like that but the way we bounced back showed it didn’t fester in the team.

“We came back and played the way we set out to play. I think it was a good performance in the end but it’s frustrating as we came away with nothing.

“Southampton were stubborn defensively. We didn’t really have clear-cut chances; they are a very good side and probably the best side we’ve played this season.

“That’s why they are in the position they are in the league but we’re still disappointed.”

With just two wins from 10 games, and Dawson out for a few more weeks with an ankle problem, McShane should play at bottom-placed Burnley.

But he warned: “It’s going to be tough. They’re going to be scrapping for their first win of the season.

“Obviously, they are also probably one of our rivals if we’re in the relegation end, but we’ll be looking to get a good result and some more points on the board.”
