Meyler has no designs on Hull defensive switch

The 25-year-old, primarily a central midfielder, has been identified by Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill as an emergency right-back and had an enjoyable couple of games in his new position over the past week.

Meyler is looking for a way back into the Tigers’ team having made just three substitute appearances in the Premier League so far, but does not see full-back as a realistic target.

“I think the manager (Steve Bruce) is quite happy with (Ahmed) Elmohamady and (Liam) Rosenior at right-back,” he said ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Arsenal. “I don’t think I’ll ever be playing right-back for him.

“But it is down to myself. I have got two 90 minutes under my belt in the last six days and I am looking forward to getting back to training and ready to go again.”

Since Hull invested heavily in the summer transfer window, Meyler has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at the KC Stadium.

In the league, for instance, he has just three substitute appearances to his name and 31 minutes on the pitch.

Meyler did start three of Hull’s four Europa League qualifiers and last month’s Capital One Cup loss to West Bromwich Albion.

But to someone who was such a key part of last season’s success as the Tigers comfortably avoided relegation and reached the FA Cup final, such a limited amount of game-time has come as something of a disappointment.

Nevertheless, Meyler has vowed to knuckled down on the training field and attempt to force his way back in Bruce’s first-team plans.

He added: “That is the same for everyone who is not playing.

“I missed the last squad but it is up to the player to put himself back in the manager’s plans and make sure he is not forgotten about.

“It is very easy and it happened to a few people here last year.

“I played 30 Premier League games last season and I want to keep going and build on that.”
