One thousand Oxford United supporters will watch their team try to slow Hull City’s relentless pace at the top of League One thanks to the university city’s status as a Tier 2 area.

Hull, like the majority of Yorkshire, is in Tier 3, meaning football fans cannot yet return to football grounds they have been locked out of since the coronavirus-enforced shutdown in March.

McCann said: “I’ve no mixed feelings, I think it’s great fans are allowed back in stadiums.

“We have to wait to get into Tier 2, but we’re deseprate to get fans back. We’d love them to be in our stadium and be a part of what we’re doing, cheering us on, helping us win games.

“We just have to remain patient, which we will. But it’s nice for other clubs, I would never begrudge that. Even though it’s only 1,000 fans at Oxford it will be good. Hopefully, it can work in our favour.

“It’ll be a bit of a difference when you haven’t had fans for eight months.”

Hull are four points clear at the top and five points above the play-off places, and with the January transfer window on the horizon, McCann is braced for a busy month. He hinted any moves are likely to be more reactive than proactive.

“There may be areas where we want to strengthen, but that depends on whether players wants to leave,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to leave. But at this present time we’re not looking at anyone leaving, but we do have things planned if that happens.”
