Peterborough v Hull City: Mclean promises no Posh reaction to goal

AARON McLEAN has no plans to celebrate if he scores for Hull City against former club Peterborough United.

The 28-year-old joined the Tigers for £1.3m last January so today will be his first return as a player to London Road since bringing to an end his five-year stay with Posh.

Mclean started Hull’s last game, the 1-0 home win over Reading, and is hoping to retain his place in the starting line-up even though Nigel Pearson has since signed Martyn Waghorn on loan from Leicester City.

Ahead of today’s return, the Tigers striker said: “I am sure it will be a bit weird coming back to London Road; it did when I played against Leyton Orient during my time at Posh.

“The Orient fans were giving me a bit of stick that night and that is why I wanted to celebrate when I scored.

“But I would hope that the Posh fans will remember that I gave my all for the club and I don’t expect to get a bad reception.”

Mclean faces a major fight to hold onto a striker berth following the arrival of Waghorn on loan from Leicester.

Two goals in two Under-21 appearances for England this week by Waghorn may persuade manager Pearson to start his new signing, especially as Hull have scored just three goals in six outings.

Hull head to Peterborough with a return of six points from the opening five games, a tally that has left the club in mid-table.

Posh’s home record – they thrashed Ipswich Town 7-1 on their last league outing – means the Tigers are likely to face confident opposition today and Pearson wants his team to take the game to their hosts.

He said: “Peterborough have had a good start. They have been competitive and they have already had one very high-scoring game at home.

“We know the type of opposition that they are and they will always throw everything at you so you have to be good enough to deal with that side of their game.

“They mix the game up pretty well and they have some good players.

“Peterborough also play with a lot of energy and at a very high tempo. Having said that, we have to be harder to beat than we were the last time we went on the road and we know we have to have more of a goal threat.”
