Soccer inquests and gossip: Barnsley in mid-East Tweet row

BARNSLEY have reportedly taken disciplinary action against Egyptian striker Mido after he became involved with a protest against Israel at Westminster.

The summer signing, who has made just one substitute appearance for the Reds due to injury and fitness issues, posted an offensive tweet on his Twitter account and while it was subsequently deleted, the club were made aware of it.

A club spokesman said: “It has been investigated and Mido has been spoken to. The matter has been dealt with internally and action has been taken.”

In League One, Danny Wilson’s delight at seeing his side record their first success in five away games in a 3-1 success at struggling Carlisle United at the weekend was tempered by an ankle injury to midfielder Kevin McDonald, which could keep him sidelined for several weeks.

The Scot was replaced by David McAllister shortly after the interval at Brunton Park, in a game which saw Ryan Flynn, Nick Blackman and Neal Collins find the net for the Blades.

Wilson said: “It was a great scoreline and it puts us back in the swing of things. We know it’s always dangerous against a team that is on a losing run, but we were strong and disciplined from the kick-off.”

On the McDonald challenge, he added: “There has to be some redress because it was a heavy tackle and his ankle has swollen up like a balloon, yet a little tug or push gets the same punishment, which does not seem right.

“It looks like he could be out for a few weeks at least and we will have to assess the injury once the swelling goes down.”

Doncaster Rovers’ boss Dean Saunders singled out keeper Gary Woods for praise after his side’s 1-1 draw at Swindon Town.

Rovers, several of whose players have been affected by a recent virus, dug deep to chisel out a hard-earned point, but Saunders’ troops back five refused to buckle.

He added: “Fair play to Swindon; they’ve got some good players. They put lots and lots of balls in our box but our defenders were outstanding heading it away.

“The bar also got us out of trouble and the goalkeeper played well. That’s probably the most he’s had to do this season.

“He’s doing well and the fans were singing his name and that’s the first time that’s happened for a while and that’s a good sign.”

“It would have been nice to win, but we are still joint top of the league. We’ve come away with a point and Swindon are going to be in the top six at the end of the season and we are still seven points clear of them. We had a chance to make it ten but the main thing was they didn’t beat us.”

Rotherham United are set to speak to the FA over a challenge in which skipper Ian Sharps suffered a broken nose early on in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to League Two leaders Gillingham.

Angry Millers boss Steve Evans alleged that Sharps had been the victim of a “nasty, vindictive challenge”, with the Gills player said to be involved in the incident being ex-Millers and Sheffield Wednesday striker Deon Burton, who found the net for the visitors in the triumph.

He added: “Ian Sharps had his nose smashed with an elbow and we will speak to the League and the FA about it.

“It was a red card yet the referee took no action and reckoned it was no worse than a yellow card when we spoke to him about it.”

York City boss Gary Mills bemoaned his side’s effort in a 2-0 loss at Plymouth Argyle, with the Pilgrims triumphing courtesy of a Jamal Fyfield own goal and a last-minute strike from sub Nick Chadwick.

Mills admitted: “We were second best to everything from start to finish.

“They were winning more second balls virtually for the 90 minutes, obviously that was disappointing.

“If you are not going to win second balls and are second best to everything, like we were, then we are going to end up losing games. Plymouth thoroughly deserved the three points and we got what we got: absolutely nothing.”
