Stewart heads for Ipswich after Leeds pull out of deal

The winger signed for Leeds on an emergency loan in January, with a pre-contract agreement made when his loan spell began for him to sign a three-year deal with United when his Tigers contract ran out on June 30.

But Leeds had been working towards extricating themselves from the agreement in the past month, with club sources suggesting yesterday he would not be joining the club - with the player effectively a free agent of his own declaration and a full formalised contract not in the offing.

Both Ipswich and Charlton had been monitoring the situation with Stewart, who did not attend pre-season training at the end of last week, now believed to be in East Anglia ahead of signing a deal with the Tractor Boys.

Manchester-born Stewart, 23, endured a difficult spell at United, making his debut in the infamous 6-0 derby loss at Sheffield Wednesday on January 11.

He started nine games for Leeds and featured 11 times in total, with his final appearance coming in the 3-0 loss at Watford on April 8.
