Tigers fans are told by new boy Diame that the best is yet to come

A GOAL on debut and a performance so impressive that it brought the sponsors’ man-of-the-match award, Mohamed Diame’s bow in Hull City colours was one to enjoy.

Along with fellow new boy Abel Hernandez, who also got on the scoresheet in Monday’s entertaining 2-2 draw with West Ham United, the 27-year-old Senegal international earned hero status among excited Tigers fans.

Diame himself, however, insists that it will take time for him and the other deadline-day signings to properly settle and develop an understanding with their new team-mates at the KC Stadium.

“Doing well on my debut was very important to me,” said the £3.5m signing from West Ham. “I really enjoyed my first game and I wanted to do well.

“When you play against your old team, you always want to show them that you were an important player for them.

“We drew and I scored, so I was happy. I did think it was the winner. I was very upset when we conceded the second because I wanted it to be the winner. But the team looked well. We have a great squad, with great quality. We need to show to everyone now that we are a good team.

“We do need time, though. And we can’t set any targets at the moment because we have brought in a lot of new players.

“We just need to play together more and see what happens. When we know each other better, we will be able to say what our targets are this season.”

City fans, excited by the new additions, will be delighted to hear that there is much more to come from Steve Bruce’s side once they have gelled properly.

Certainly, against West Ham they looked every bit a team that belongs in the Premier League with the additions of record £10m signing Hernandez and Diame paying instant dividends, while substitutes Hatem Ben Arfa and Gaston Ramirez showed enough in their own brief debuts to suggest the future looks bright.

Three of the new boys will hope to be involved at Newcastle this weekend – Ben Arfa can not play under the terms of his loan deal – with Diame admitting he wants to repay the faith of Bruce. He said: “The manager told me I was a great player. The way the team plays football, that’s why I came here.

“I also wanted to play in midfield. At West Ham, I was out wide and it is not my position. I enjoyed playing with Tom (Huddlestone) and Jake (Livermore). Now with the squad we have got, we just need to play more games together and we will get better and better.”
