The centre-forward suffered another hamstring injury in Saturday’s 5-0 defeat at Bournemouth and will miss tonight’s visit of Watford, as will goalkeeper Ben Hamer.

Although Ward is only expected to be out for a fortnight, it will nevertheless highlight the importance of signing an extra striker in January.

Saturday was only Ward’s second start since rejoining the club in the summer. This injury is not thought to be related to the one which delayed his debut. Fraizer Campbell is the only other specialist option.

The Terriers have been linked with Bohemians’ Danny Grant, with reports of a “derisory” offer being rejected. Hull City manager Grant McCann has admitted interest, but said that might not necessarily translate into an offer for the winger, who can also play down the middle.

There was some good news in the latest injury bulletin, however, with Jonathan Hogg and Demeaco Duhaney available to face the Hornets. Hamer’s injury is “not serious”.

The Terriers conceded six goals in the three matches Hamer missed due to Covid-19 isolation, even with Ryan Schofield – his likely deputy this evening – keeping a clean sheet against Wycombe Wanderers.

Saturday was comfortably Town’s biggest defeat under Corberan and he wants them to feel the “pain” of it.

“We didn’t compete well,” he said. “It’s not just about fighting and running, it’s about concentrating on the details. We contributed to their goals.

“We needed a higher level of concentration. To do it every two or three days is a challenge but we need to be ready for this challenge. The first part of the process has to be to feel the pain.”

Corberan controversially rested a number of key players at Dean Court, with Pipa and Carel Eiting unused substitutes, fielding a relatively youthful side.

“This experience will help them to know the demands of the Championship,” he insisted.
