Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Harvey Barnes win first England call-ups as Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood's punsihment continues

The Everton centre-forward has been named in Gareth Southgate's squad for the Wembley triple-header against Wales, Belgium and Denmark this month, putting him within sight of a boyhood dream and reducing his mum to tears.

As expected, Phil Foden and Bradford-born Mason Greenwood have both been overlooked after being sent home from the last trip for breaking coronavirus protocols, but Harry Maguire has been recalled. He was left out of the last squad after being found guilty of assault on holiday in Greece, but is appealing the verdict.

Former Barnsley loanee Harvey Barnes is another first-time selection – along with Arsenal's Bukayo Saka – but his Leciester City team-mate James Maddison has been left out as he returns from injury.

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been retained after a difficult debut playing slightly out of position in Iceland, as has Kyle Walker, who was sent off in his 50th international appearance, in Denmark.

Like Maguire and Walker, Calvert-Lewin is a product of Sheffield United's academy born in the city. He has scored eight goals in five appearances including two hat-tricks this season having hit 15 goals in 2019-20.

The 23-year-old is a traditional-style centre-forward and his club manager Carlo Ancelotti and his assistant Duncan Ferguson have been working on turning him into more of a penalty-area predator by following the example of one of Ancelotti's former strikers, Filippo Inzhagi.

'I'm a very, very proud man to get this first England call,” Calvert-Lewin revealed.

'I phoned my mum and my dad, and my mum burst into tears.

"It’s something we’ve spoken about since I was a young boy. To get here now and get the call-up is a dream come true. I’m very happy.”

England manager Gareth Southgate likes those who have come through the age-group system at St George's Park, and is a fan of Calvert-Lewin's.

“He's been in the pathway through the Under-21s, had a good season last season,” he explained. “A lot of Dominic's game I've liked for a long time, what he's adding now is the goals that haven't always been there and in the last 18 months or so he has really improved in that area.

'He's been a big part of Everton's starting the season as well as they have and I'm very pleased to be able to call him up for the first time.”

Captain Harry Kane is England's undisputed No 9, but Calvert-Lewin, Southampton's in-form Danny Ings and Chelsea's Tammy Abraham are in competition to be his back-up.

Barnes has been the main beneficiary of Manchester United youngster Greenwood's ill-discipline in Copenhagen, and Jack Grealish, James Ward-Prowse and Conor Coady have all been retained in a 30-man squad.

Southgate suggested Greenwood and Foden would come back into his thinking for the next squad, saying: "These lads have suffered now enough ... I think they need this period of reflection."

There is no place for Doncaster-born Danny Rose, who has been frozen out at Tottenham Hotspur.

The game at home to Wales is a friendly on October 8, but the matches against Belgium and Denmark, each three days later, are Nations League matches.
