If Pep Guardiola’s City win they are champions. They have won 31 of their 37 games this season and sit on 95 points – a figure that was a competition record until they beat that last year.

Slip up and Jurgen Klopp’s Reds – on 94 points – are likely to cash in and win a first title since 1990. Third-place Chelsea are 23 points behind Liverpool, such has been the gulf in class between the top two and the rest.

The denoument of the league season comes at the end of a remarkable week in which the exploits of English clubs in European competition has been front and back page news.

Liverpool overturned a three-goal deficit to overcome Barcelona and reach a second successive Champions League final on Tuesday night. Then, 24 hours later, Tottenham Hotspur secured a first appearance in club football’s biggest game by staging their own rescue act from three goals down, this time in the space of 45 minutes at Ajax.

On Thursday, Arsenal and Chelsea completed a momentous period by booking a date to face each other in the Europa League final later this month.

Now, the focus shifts back to the Premier League, and a title race in which City and Liverpool have been relentless.

City have won their last 13 League games and last dropped a point when losing to Newcastle in January. Liverpool have almost matched that pace, winning their last eight games. They last dropped points in a goalless draw with Everton in early March and their only defeat of the season came on January 3 at the hands of Manchester City, a result that could in the end determine the champions of England.
