Yorkshire quartet of Millie Bright, Beth Mead, Rachel Daly and Lucy Staniforth in England World Cup squad

A quartet of Yorkshire players have been named by Phil Neville in his England Lionesses squad for this summer’s women’s World Cup in France.

Whitby-born Beth Mead, the Arsenal forward, and Sheffield’s Millie Bright, who plays for Chelsea, have been first-team regulars under Neville, who has steered England to the SheBelieves Cup and the No 3 ranking in the world in the last few months.They head to France as genuine contenders, with a 23-strong squad named on Wednesday that also includes Harrogate defender Rachel Daly – who went to university in America and still plays Stateside for Houston Dash – and Birmingham City midfielder Lucy Staniforth, from York.

Mead tweeted: "Wow dream come true!!!! Words cannot describe this feeling! IM GOING TO A WORLD CUP! Come on @Lionesses @kelly_smith10 thank you!"

Bright added on her social media account: "Wow!!! I’m so honoured and pleased to have been selected for my first World Cup but to then have @jamaledwards announced my selection FRANCE here we come WWC2019"

Daly tweeted: "This is an absolute dream come true! Playing for my country in the World Cup. Wow. This is what I’ve worked for and dreamt of every day since I can remember! Honoured to be a part of this amazing squad. Proud day for my family! #BeReady @Lionesses @louise_daly @fullfitmadforit"

And Staniforth wrote on Twitter: "Dreams really do come true. I am so proud to be representing @Lionesses at the @FIFAWWC in France! #letsdothis"

But there is no place in the squad for Izzy Christiansen. The Lyon midfielder suffered a fractured fibula and ankle ligament damage in the SheBelieves Cup in early March and subsequently underwent surgery. Manchester City goalkeeper Ellie roebuck, from Sheffield, has also missed out on selection.Forward Fran Kirby returns after missing the friendlies against Canada on April 5 and Spain four days later due to a knee problem.Captain Steph Houghton and goalkeeper Carly Telford, who withdrew ahead of the second of those games because of a groin issue and concussion respectively, are also back.The tournament starts on June 7. England are in Group D alongside Scotland, who they face in their opener on June 9, Argentina and Japan.Neville said: “This is a significant moment in our World Cup campaign and I want to congratulate all of the players in our squad.“I must also thank those who just missed out for all of their efforts. “We would not be in this position without them, they have played a big part in our World Cup journey and I know they will be our biggest supporters this summer.“Picking a squad is never easy but I believe in this group and I know they will be ready to help us perform at our very best at the finals.“We know what we are capable of achieving in France and are determined to do all we can to be successful. We keep saying it but the hard work starts now and we are going to give it everything we have to make the nation proud.”
