Isaac Mbenza looking at home at last with Huddersfield Town

WHEN Huddersfield Town winger Isaac Mbenza was substituted late on in his side’s victory over Watford, the ovation from those on the home bench and the club hierarchy was unprompted and genuine.

After a couple of fraught seasons in West Yorkshire and a difficult journey, the 24-year-old is finally starting to look at home.

That Mbenza has shown strength amid adversity and come out on the other side is testament to his character and aptitude and both were displayed in Saturday’s win, arguably the most impressive result of the campaign for the Terriers.

Mbenza’s awareness in blocking Ben Foster’s attempted pass out from the back provided him with an assist for Town’s opener.

The former Montpellier player’s discipline in his defensive duties when Watford pushed for a way back into the game on the restart was also eye-catching and referenced his development as a team player under Carlos Corberan.

One of those who was suitably impressed was someone who has seen plenty in football and commands the instant respect of all his team-mates at Huddersfield in Fraizer Campbell.

When Campbell says something, his colleagues listen and his words carry weight.

The forward, who was the beneficiary of Mbenza’s charge-down, said: “Football is full of ups and downs and sometimes, it tests your character and you might doubt yourself a little bit.

“But the sign of a strong-minded player and a good character is someone who has been down in the dumps and managed to turn it around and now he (Mbenza) is putting in great performances for the team and got me a goal and working hard for his team-mates.

“It is probably harder than he has ever worked before and it is positive signs and long may it continue.”

A few words of on-pitch wisdom from Campbell are also doing their bit to help out Mbenza, with their connection being there to see on a resounding day in the club’s season on Saturday.

He added: “I am always trying to improve him. I have been around a long time and it is important the older players try and help the younger ones at the start of their careers to help them improve and go onto big things.

“I am always talking to him as he does a lot of my running. I do some of his if I have to!”
