Jewell will not call shots against Gunners

New Ipswich manager Paul Jewell will be among the spectators for tomorrow's Carling Cup semi-final with Arsenal before beginning his attempt to rebuild shattered confidence at Portman Road.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City boss has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Championship club to replace Roy Keane and inherits a club languishing just three points above the relegation zone.

Promotion to the Premier League remains the target for the Suffolk club and Jewell is expected – as Keane was – to deliver before his deal runs out in 2013.

First, however, the Tractor Boys face the Gunners in the first leg of the League Cup and Jewell confirmed that he would not be taking charge for that game. Coaches Ian McParland and Tony Loughlan – who oversaw Sunday's 7-0 thrashing at Chelsea in the FA Cup third round – will prepare for the tie with Jewell officially starting work on Thursday morning.

Jewell said: "Tony and Charlie (McParland) will be in charge on Wednesday and I will take charge on Thursday. I've not even met the players or the staff yet, it's been a real whirlwind and I don't want to cause a distraction. I have DVDs to watch and I will be in the stands on Wednesday night."

Liverpool have appointed former Chelsea, West Ham and Newcastle assistant manager Steve Clarke as first team coach.

Bristol Rovers have appointed Dave Penney as their new manager. He guided Doncaster Rovers to promotion from the Conference in 2003 and then won the League Two title the following season. He replaces Paul Trollope, who was sacked in December. Rovers are currently third from bottom in League One.

Aldershot confirmed that manager Kevin Dillon has left the club by mutual consent. Dillon, 51, took charge of the League Two side in November 2009 and led the Shots to the play-offs last season but Saturday's home defeat to Oxford left them 20th.

Peterborough manager Gary Johnson last night became the latest manager to lose his job after disagreements with chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
