Johnson uncertain over O’Sullivan’s return to Oakwell

Barnsley boss Lee Johnson has played down the chances of an Oakwell return for midfielder John O’Sullivan.

The 21-year-old Irishman enjoyed an eight-game loan spell at Barnsley last season and has been linked with a move back to South Yorkshire.

Reports in Lancashire yesterday claimed the Reds had been knocked back in a fresh approach for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, who was an unused substitute for Rovers in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.

But Johnson yesterday refused to be drawn on whether a deal could be thrashed out.

“I’m not totally sure what’s happening,” said Johnson. “We had John before [on loan] and he did very well, but he is a Blackburn player.

“Of course we’d be interested in a player like John because everyone liked him, but he’s not our player.

“If Blackburn have come out and said he’s not for sale then that’s it isn’t it? That’s their prerogative,” added Johnson, who confirmed he would like to bring in a couple of players before the transfer deadline closes on September 1.
